This comprehensive case study examines the diversity of employees at London’s National Theatre, utilising the Origins segmentation system. The analysis, conducted using publicly available data from the programme for Welcome to Thebes, highlights both achievements and gaps in the Theatre’s workforce diversity. While the ethnic profile of staff aligns partially with London’s population, notable disparities exist in certain departments, such as costumes, stage, and catering.
The Origins system enabled the classification of 99% of employee names, revealing trends in representation by ethno-cultural groups and job functions. It uncovered overrepresentation of certain groups, such as Irish and Scottish staff, and underrepresentation of others, including South Asians and individuals of Muslim heritage.
The case study also highlights the system’s ability to provide granular diversity analysis without the need for intrusive surveys or questionnaires. By identifying these disparities, the National Theatre can evaluate recruitment and workplace practices to foster a more equitable distribution of roles across departments.
